Even if  he attempted to control her,
she had a spirit that refused to surrender.
Even if  he had tried to destroy her self-worth,
she had a confidence that survived.
Even if  she had been beat down,
she had a determination that preserved a tiny spark of hope.
Even if  she feared he would kill her,
she had the cleverness to escape.
